Me and Paris Hilton

Summer is here. Well the calendar says June 6 but the 55-degree nights and 65-degree days this week sure make me wonder if it is summer. Summer for me has always been a season of dualities. The warm weather brings out the partially nude men that makes it so fun. As a good friend of mine once said (Where are you Chris Collette?), “Oh to be a bicycle seat in summer.” But on the other side I have to wear less to keep cool. I am not a skinny person and never have been. That’s OK. I applaud my friends Jen, Lynne and Andi who have all taken it upon their selves to rework their bodies into sexy, sleek females. I contemplate the change but as of now still think about it with little or no action.

As those who read this know I am a huge TV fan. So it would seem that summer would, with the end of 1st run shows and the barrage of summer re-runs, give me a chance to break out and see the greater world again. But those sneaky TV execs have created summer series and specials that keep me glued. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for Kyle XY this summer.

However I am trekking out this weekend to Akron to see Kathy Griffin live. Kathy is so funny and like me she is fascinated with pop culture yet finds it all strange and evil at the same time. It reminds me of the old can’t take your eyes from the accident idea.

America’s utter attraction to and obsession with stars and those who act like stars is something that fascinates me and many of my friends. Many around me claim that this obsession is ruining our society. I don’t think so. This obsession has been around for as long as there have been those whose destiny it is to entertain the greater masses.

Just look to the recent past and the Beatles. What would my friends have said to the screaming, fainting mass of young women who flocked to wherever the Fab 4 were located. Put yourself in the “normal” mindframe of the early 1960’s and I think you would have thought this hysteria as indicative of the ruin of America and even the world.

Or perhaps we should step back a few more years to a young singer named Jennie Lind, a Swedish opera singer from the 1800’s who every move and relationships were splashed across the newspapers. If the internet had existed in 1850 I’m sure that MSNBC online would be showing us what she was wearing at the Paris Opera.
Well’ that’s about it for now, off to play some poker with some friends. Wish me luck!

    LOL-that's a great line.

I can see your point about times being no different today than any other time. Of course people have always been fascinated by the rich and famous, the Upper Crust as it were. But there's a difference between seeing that sort of personality news in the tabloids or on E! or whathaveyou, and calling it actual BREAKING NEWS-- which to me should be reserved for dead presidents, declarations or acts of war, major national or international catastrophes, or even some good news, like BUSH IMPEACHED.

Of course I was damn glad that Paris was sent back to jail. I think one of the reasons Americans are so caught up in this stuff is that we are constantly telling ourselves that we're the little people and only the big people get a break. When we stop acting like that, and seeing ourselves that way -- powerless and stupid -- society will change.
